Veelgestelde vragen over Laser Pigment

What makes the KTP laser so effective in treating pigment spots?

The KTP laser (Potassium Titanyl Phosphate) works with a specific wavelength of 532 nm, which is very effectively absorbed by melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots. When the laser energy reaches the pigment cells, it is converted into heat that breaks the pigment particles into smaller fragments. These fragments are then naturally eliminated by the body. The unique feature of the KTP laser is the precision with which specific pigment spots can be targeted without damaging the surrounding skin structure, ensuring effective results with minimal downtime.

How does the KTP laser differ from other pigment treatments?

Unlike chemical peels and other lasers that treat larger skin surfaces, the KTP laser works very specifically on specific pigment spots. Where peels remove the top layer of skin and therefore require more downtime, the KTP laser works selectively on the pigment without damaging the skin. Compared to IPL treatments, the KTP laser is often more effective on stubborn or deeper pigment spots. The treatment is less intensive than a Q-switched laser, which reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in darker skin types where pigment treatments are often challenging.

What can I expect during and immediately after a KTP laser treatment?

During the treatment you will experience short, sharp pricks that are often described as feeling like a rubber band against the skin. The intensity depends on the depth of pigment and the energy used. Immediately after the treatment the treated pigment spots will often become darker - this is a good sign that the treatment is working. These dark scabs will remain visible for 5-10 days before falling off naturally. Slight redness and swelling may occur but usually disappear within 24-48 hours. It is important not to scratch or scrub the treated areas while the scabs fall off naturally.

Are all types of pigmentation suitable for treatment with the KTP laser?

Not all pigmentation responds equally well to the KTP laser. The treatment works best on superficial pigment spots such as sun damage, age spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Deeper or hormonally related pigmentation such as melasma often requires a more cautious approach and can respond less predictably. Tattoos and moles are not suitable for this treatment. During your consultation, your skin specialist will make a thorough analysis of your pigmentation and determine whether the KTP laser is the right treatment, or whether another approach such as the Mela 02 treatment would be more suitable for your specific situation.
