What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a viscoelastic gel, a natural product based on the polysaccharide hyaluronan.
In the human body, hyaluronic acid occurs naturally. Among other things, it keeps our skin hydrated and elastic. When the aging process causes our production of hyaluronic acid to slow down, wrinkles start to form. This natural decrease of hyaluronic acid in the body starts around the age of 25. With a dermal filler treatment, the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid can be replaced and replenished. Tiny subcutaneous pads of filler will create volume and support and reduce wrinkles, lines and sagging. There are different types of hyaluronic acid, mostly defined by their different degrees of viscosity. Depending on the indication, the doctor will choose the product with the right viscosity.

The hyaluronic acid treatment
Before a dermal filler treatment, our doctors will always administer a suitable anesthetic so that you won’t feel pain. Using a cannula or a short and thin injection needle, the cosmetic doctor will inject the gel at the right place. Some fillers have already been mixed with an anesthetic, which means that further anesthesia is not necessary.
The treatment is fairly quick and will last about half an hour. If you’re coming in for a liquid facelift, the total treatment will take about an hour. During a liquid facelift, multiple areas in the face are treated to restore harmony. It is often described as a mini facelift.
The results of hyaluronic acid
A treatment with hyaluronic acid immediately provides visible results and a fresh, fuller and smoother look. The treated area might be slightly swollen after the injections, but this swelling won’t last longer than 36 hours and in most cases, there won’t be any visible swelling. In exceptional cases, some bruising might appear at the injection spots. You can easily camouflage these bruises by using some foundation or powder. You can resume your normal daily activities straight after the treatment.
How long will the results of hyaluronic acid treatment last?t
Just like human hyaluronic acid, the hyaluronic acid used in dermal fillers is a biological substance. This means that the body will break it down naturally. You will enjoy the results, depending on the area and the product used, for 6 to 18 months. The treatment can be repeated without any problems. As the filler volume gradually diminishes over time, you might also choose to get a small touch-up dermal filler treatment in between.
